How to choose an area to live in Bangalore (Bengaluru)

Bengaluru is really many cities in one — a five-kilometre move can change your commute by an hour and your monsoon experience entirely. The east and south (Whitefield, Mahadevapura, Bellandur, parts of Bommanahalli) have seen repeated, severe waterlogging; other pockets stay largely dry. Don't generalise about "Bangalore" — evaluate the specific locality.

The four questions that matter most

1. Commute. Where do you actually work? Test the door-to-door time at rush hour, not the off-peak estimate. Tech corridors (ORR, Whitefield, Electronic City) can be brutal.
2. Flooding. Is the spot low-lying and near a lake or storm-water drain? This is Bengaluru's defining risk — check it first.
3. Daily walkability. How much of your routine — groceries, pharmacy, a good café, a clinic — is within a 10-minute walk?
4. Vibe fit. Indiranagar and Koramangala are lively and dense; Jayanagar and Malleshwaram are leafier and calmer; the outer tech belts trade walkability for newer, larger flats.
